Import Export Code (IEC) is a registration required for any business involved in importing or exporting goods and services from India. An IEC is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). It is a 10-digit code that has a lifetime validity and does not require any renewal.
An Import Export Code gives international options and exposure to a domestic business in India. Having an IEC can also make a business eligible for numerous export scheme benefits offered by the DGFT and Customs and Export Promotion Council. An individual can also obtain an IEC as there is no legal requirement of having a separate business to get IEC registration in India.
The first step to get an Import Export Code is to submit the relevant documents for the preparation of registration application. The IEC application is prepared and submitted for approval from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade. The IEC fee is paid to the authority, after which the application is processed. The Import Export Code is issued by DGFT within 5-7 days.
