Director Identification Number (DIN)

DIN or Director Identification Number is a unique identification 8-digit number for an existing or new director of a company. Director Identification Number (DIN) was introduced in India through the Companies Amendment Act, 2006. DIN provides a unique identity to the director and helps in maintaining information and record of all directors of a company.

DIN contains information regarding the director i.e. the name, PAN and their current address which enables the authority to verify that the director’s identity is valid and all information provided is accurate and faithful. Whenever a return, application or any information related to a company is submitted, the document is attested with the DIN of the directors

Documents required to get a DIN

  1. Proof of identity, like passport, Voter ID card, PAN card or Aadhaar card.
  2. Address proof like passport, Aadhaar card, Voter ID card, driving license or electricity bill.

Process of obtaining a DIN

After the requisite documents are submitted, the DIN form is filled and submitted with the ROC. Once the documents and details of application are verified, the DIN issued to the director.


What is Director Identification Number (DIN)?

Any individual, who is an existing director of a company or intends to be appointed as a director of the company, can file an application for allotment of DIN.

The Central Government (Office of Regional Director (Northern Region), Ministry of Corporate Affairs) allots the DIN.
Who can sign e-Form DIN 4?
The e-Form DIN-4 is required to be digitally signed only by a Chartered Accountant or a Company Secretary or a Cost Accountant (in whole- time practice).
What is the validity period of provisional DIN?
A provisional DIN is valid for 60 days from the date of generation.
What is the validity of regular DIN?
A regular DIN allotted to a person is valid for the lifetime of the individual and shall not be allotted to any other person during his lifetime.
What if the DIN application is rejected?
If the DIN application is rejected, a fresh application must be filed.
What is the DIN form is identified as a Potential Duplicate?
If the contents specified in the DIN form matches with an already filled DIN application form, then the application shall be marked as a potential duplicate and then shall be processed by DIN Cell.
What is the DIN application is put under Resubmission?
If the DIN application is put under Resubmission additional documents must be submitted for rectifying the DIN application within a period of 15 days from the date on which it is marked as Resubmission.
Whether provisional DIN can be used for e-Filing?
No, the particulars of the person with the provisional DIN number can not be filled in the e-forms and thus the person cannot sign as a director.
