The self-styled godman Asaram has been convicted by the court on the charges of raping a teenage girl at his ashram in 2013. Special Judge Madhu Sudan Sharma announced Asaram's punishment inside the Jodhpur Central Jail where Asaram is lodged.

Asaram has been sentenced to an imprisonment for life, till death, along with Rs. 1 lakh. The other convicts have also been fined Rs. 50,000 each.

The troubles for the self-proclaimed godman started in August 2013, when a teenage girl from Shahajahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, studying at his ashram at Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh filed a complaint that Asaram raped her in the pretence of curing her.

The Parents of the girl filed a Zero FIR against Asaram on August 20, 2013, and later on, the case was transferred to the Jodhpur court. Asaram was arrested 11 days later from Indore and has been in jail ever since.

The Jodhpur police filed a charge sheet naming Asaram and four other people, booking Asaram under provisions of POCSO Act, SC/ST Act and the IPC under Sections342 (wrongful confinement), 354A (sexual harassment), 370(4) (trafficking), 376(2)f (rape on a woman when she is under 12 years of age), 506 (criminal intimidation), 509/34 and 120(B) (criminal conspiracy).

The Centre asked the Rajasthan, Gujarat and Haryana governments to tighten security as the three states have a large number of followers of 77-year-old Asaram and to avoid the situation that occurred at the time of Ram Rahim's conviction.
