On Friday, March 10, the special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court extended Karti Chidambaram’s custody in relation to the INX Media case for another 3 days. He has been in CBI remand for the last 9 days prior to this decision.

Karti Chidambaram was accused of taking Rs. 10 lakh in 2007 for clearing foreign investment worth Rs. 305 crore for INX Media, owned by Peter and Indrani Mukherjee.

The CBI has sought his custody for an additional 6 days on the grounds that it needed to interrogate further based on some more ‘incriminating material’ discovered against him.

Additional Solicitor general Tushar Mehta informed the court that a Compact Disk and several documents were found which have a direct connection with the case and must be sent to Central Forensic Science Laboratory for examination.

The special court also allowed CBI to arrange a personal meeting between Chidambaram and his Chartered accountant, S. Bhaskararaman, a co-accused in the case, and currently in judicial custody in Tihar jail. Bhaskararaman was arrested on February 16 and will remain in judicial custody till March 22.

The CBI has to file a reply to Karti Chidambaram’s application for bail, which will be heard by the court on March 15. The CBI court also directed the agency to file its reply to Chidambaram’s bail application, which would be heard on 15 March.

Additionally, the Delhi High Court granted interim relief to Karti and told the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to take no coercive action against him till March 20. The bench comprising of Justices S. Muralidhar and I.S. Mehta asked Karti to surrender his passport to ED and cooperate with the investigation.
