Disfigured body of an 11-year-old girl was found in Surat Bhestan locality of Gujarat on April 6. Police reports say that the girl was likely held captive, tortured and raped multiple times.

The case came out as the shocking reminder of the Kathua rape case, where Asifa, an 8-year-old girl was gang-raped and murdered inside a Hindu temple near Jammu. A post-mortem was conducted and it was reported that there were around 86 injury marks on the body of the girl.

The Surat case has been transferred to the Crime Branch for further investigation. Due to the ongoing mass outrage for Kathua and Unnao rape cases, the Surat police stepped up to investigate the matter.

Earlier, the had printed over 1300 posters of the girl and posted them in many local areas and social media to find out the identity of the girl. A cash reward of Rs 20,000 was also announced for any person who gave information about the girl.

However, the police is yet to identify the identity of the girl. Satish Sharma, Commissioner of Police of Surat, said the girl probably belonged to the Odia or Bengali community and was killed and the body dumped outside the city.

On Saturday, people living in Udhna and Pandesara areas started a candle march to protest against police inaction in the case and asked for an expeditious probe. Muslim community members and MLA Jignesh Mevani-led Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch also held protests in Mehsana town of north Gujarat condemning the three brutal rape crimes on Sunday
